Boogaloos Grand Slam Stoneridge

A perfect spring day at Johannesburg’s Stoneridge Skatepark and several anxious skaters welcomed our first of three Grand Slam events leading up to the Kimberley Diamond Cup on 27-29 September. Over 100 of JHB’s best skaters came out to compete for a shot at their share at R50k along with a shot at a slot in the All Cities competition at the KDC along with a spot in the KDC Amateur competition. With Sipho on the mic along with live performances by Shadow Party and City of Heroes to keep the crowd hyped, the skaters were killing themselves for a piece of the pie. Okay, well, there weren’t any deaths, however; broken hands and  sprained ankles were just a few results of skating with the intentions of winning R10000 and a spot in the KDC Am. The expression on Sean Burgers face upon landing the nollie hardflip down the 4 stair was one of great pain and relief. How he managed to skate the rest of his heat AND the Best Trick jam with a rolled ankle was surprising as well as painful for the crowd to watch. Kyfie Kruger’s kickflip over the bank attempts resulted in a broken hand and the Skaters Choice award. Kyfie killed the park in the Advanced division contest along with his team, G1-Three, in the All Cities Qualifiers before one subtle move ended his day early.

In the end, it was Trae Rice’s smooth flow of the park complimented by his level of consistency and trick difficulty that convinced the judges that Trae was worthy of representing some of the country’s best skating at KDC, allowing Trae to take home the wildcard entry to the KDC Am. Anthony De Mendonca’s effortless style and signature hardflips helped him take first place in the advanced division competition and Craig Evans’ flow and consistency earned him first in the Beginners division. The local heroes, team “Woolfs and 2 Other Dudes” qualified for the KDC All Cities competition, consisting of the Woolf brothers Adam and David along with the two other dudes, Anthony De Mendonca and Brandon Valjalo.

Boogaloos also provided several needy skaters of Alexandria township with fresh complete skateboards to cap off the night. Thanks again to our sponsors: Kumba Iron Ore, Boogaloos, Northern Cape Tourism Authority, Monster Energy, Etnies, Skullcandy, Converse, and Volcom.
