It was a scorching hot Kimberley day , and hundreds of amped skaters came to check out the launch of 2014’s KDC skateboarding events across the country. With a R50k prize purse and slots in the KDC Am finals on the line, the contest was at the same caliber of skating, if not higher, than that of KDC’s 2013 amateur competitions. We held contests for Women’s Street, Amateur Vert, Rider Cup, and Am Street, and set the bar for the level of skating in the country throughout the year. Cape Town’s infamous hip hop duo and 20SK8’s hype men B Fake had the crowd hyped following the finals with local hip hop acts Taliban and Prof on the mic throughout the day. In the end it, first place winners included Khule Ngubane for Am Street, team ‘Get It’ for Rider Cup, Werner du Plessis for Am Vert, and Kelly Murray for Women’s Street. Thanks to all the skaters of South Africa’s skaters and Kimberley’s skateboarding enthusiasts for supporting South African skateboarding as well as our sponsors WSGP, Kumba Iron Ore, Northern Cape Tourism, Northern Cape Dept. of Social & Economic Development and Tourism, and Monster Energy for making this possible. Special shout out to Craig & Rodney at Pragmatics for helping to make sure business was taken care of along with our judges Wandile Msomi, AD Henderson, Rian Biljon, and Sam Khumalo for keeping the crowd hyped on the mic.
Cheers to another epic weekend for South African skateboarding. We’ve got a gang of events planned for the rest of 2014, including the Skateboarding for Hope Tour, 3 Grand Slam stops, as well as KDC on 1-5 October. We hope to see you around!
